Why I started Coach to Elevate

From the outside, I looked fine.

Before I became an executive at Shell, I led the team that bought and sold all the gasoline, diesel and jet fuel across North America. It was a high profile job at huge scale, and from the outside, I looked like I had it figured out.

Inside, I was wide awake at 2 a.m., replaying conversations and bracing for what could go wrong. I was avoiding conversations I needed to have. I was carrying way too much myself and working hard to manage how I was being seen. I thought the answer was to just try harder.

Then Shell's people survey came in. My results were the lowest in the entire department.

I was devastated. I'd worked so hard, and I felt like I'd failed the people who were working so hard alongside me. I could keep working around the edges, or I could make a real change. I found a mentor, and I hired a coach.

What I finally saw was that I was standing on a bridge I didn't know how to cross. The playbook that got me to the edge of executive leadership had stopped working. Once I saw it, I couldn't unsee it. And everything changed.

Within a year of doing that work, I was promoted to the executive level, leading a $2 billion global chemical business across three regions.
